History of Zastava 101 has begun in 1967 in Turin, when the legendary Dante Giacosa has developed project FIAT 128 B1- hatchback, in cooperation with design studio Boano. Combined with modern engine created by Aurelio Lampredi, this concept was part of 128 family which was way ahead of its’ time. Management of FIAT made a decision not to produce this car in Rivalta, but Giacosa had the vision of future which he has passed to the legendary Prvoslav Rakovic – father of Yugoslavian car industry, head of Zavodi Crvena Zastava from Kragujevac. In October 1971 the production of Zastava 101, the most advanced model in its class in Europe, has started. At the very first day on the marketplace, the legend of Zastava 101 was born and the pages of automotive history have adopted her. This car was so popular that ZCZ couldn’t meet number of cars need for export, so the Polish FSO bought the license and started the production of Zastava 1100 P. This cooperation has created undisputed friendship between Yugoslavia and Poland. The crown jewel of this little hatchback was the Kragujevac – Kilimanjaro expedition in 1975. Despite the fact that mass production of this car has stopped in 2008, Zastava 101 remains the cheapest car on the marketplace in Serbia, and the number of restored 70s and 80s models is increasing rapidly.
